Join us for a unique opportunity to take a 9km or 17km night walk along the forest tracks and walking paths through the Galway Wind Park under the light of a full moon. Organised with support from Coillte and SSE Ireland, proceeds from this event will be used to support Galway Mountain Rescue Team's long-term objective of constructing a dedicated mountain rescue base.
The full route is 17.1km long with an altitude gain of 384m. The shorter option (the northern half of the full Fig-8 route) is 9km with an altitude gain of 185m.
Participants will be briefed on the walk and will be given a copy of the Walk Route Map. Participants can opt to walk with one of the organised groups which will each be led by a member of Galway MRT or they can choose to follow the route independently with their own friends/family. In either case, they will meet route marshals along the way who will assist if required.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
The event is open to adults and children aged 12 to 17. Children must be accompanied by an adult aged at least 23 years at all times.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Parking will be available within the Wind Park and a shuttle bus will ferry participants between the car park and the start
What can I bring into the event?
Participants are advised to prepare carefully for this event and to check the weather forecast in advance. Suitable footwear (i.e. walking boots or sturdy trail runners) and a waterproof/windproof jacket are essential. As this is a long walk on gravel trails in darkness, we suggest all participants should carry a small backpack containing some food, water (or a hot drink), spare clothes (an extra fleece layer, a hat, a pair of gloves) and a small First Aid kit. Walkers should also carry a fully charged mobile phone and a torch/head torch.
Can I bring my dog?
While we are sure your dog is awesome, he/she cannot join us on the night. While we are also big fans of dogs, we cannot be sure that everyone who is participating will feel the same way.
For a booking for an organised group, what is the adult per child ratio required ? (e.g. Scout Group, Foróige, TY students etc.)
The adult per child ratio for organised youth groups is 1:6. Please note that adults are required to stay with the children for the duration of the night walk. If you have any questions You can send an e-mail to our registration co-ordinator Mary O’Shea or Tweet to @howlatmoon_ie
